One column contains an inscription describing the colonnade: "Varsity Plaza stand as a tribute to University of Michigan athletes—constructed in 1997 through the generous contributions of students, alumni and supporters—a chronology of conference and national titles won by the University of Michigan teams is etched into this circle of champions.”
